Process

A great deal of time and money goes into the making of a fibreglass boat: the mouldings, fibreglass construction, decks, superstructure and fittings, yet its perceived value, as with a car, is determined by its appearance. The difference between a car and a fibreglass boat, however, is that the shiny outer surface is built-in during the moulding process, not sprayed on afterwards, and cannot readily be replaced.

fibreglass lay-up and gelcoat diagram

The outer layer of GRP 'gelcoat' provides a high gloss show-room finish, which is slightly porous and, once exposed to the elements, can become dull and faded. Stains, whether caused by pollutants and minerals in the water, fuel spillages or atmospheric pollution, all penetrate the surface, UV damage from the sun's rays is also a common problem. Many stains go deep within the gelcoat making them difficult to remove.

Most 'conventional' methods of cleaning involve the use of abrasives, they remove stains by rubbing away the surface of discoloured areas of the gelcoat. Over time this can cause long term damage; the less gelcoat, the deeper stains go. Continued use of abrasives - even the mild 'non scratch' varieties - leaves the gelcoat looking patchy, and if used too often can remove it altogether, revealing the unsightly fibreglass lay-up beneath. Damage of this degree can dramatically reduce the value of a craft, and while yes, it can be painted, the boat will never be restored to its original glory, nor rarely achieve its full market value.

By using the G R Pro-clean service you can prevent this happening to your boat and maintain both its appearance and residual value.

Our system safely and harmlessly neutralises and lifts stains without causing damage to the gelcoat.

restoring your boat to 'as new' conditionDifferent types of staining require different treatments which is why we have trained operatives to apply them, ensuring optimum results, and restoring your boat to 'as new' condition every time.

After a full deep clean treatment the rejuvenated gelcoat is sealed and protected, to guard against further staining and to protect against ultraviolet light.

Your craft can be treated at its home base, hard standing or afloat. We recommend an annual treatment. To find your nearest Licensed Operative please visit our locations page.
